How Many Days Do You Need in Morocco? Itinerary Ideas from 5 to 15 Days

Five days, ten days or two weeks? Here is how I would use your time in Morocco, with realistic routes and honest advice about distances.

Morocco looks compact on a map, but the distances are real and the roads often wind through mountains and valleys. The most common mistake I see is trying to see everything in a few days. My philosophy is simple: it is better to discover fewer places deeply than to spend your whole holiday in the car.

5 to 6 days: one region, done well

With less than a week, choose one focus. You can combine Marrakech with the Atlantic charm of Essaouira and a day in the High Atlas, or spend your time between Casablanca, Rabat and Fez for a short taste of the imperial cities. A Sahara trip is possible from Marrakech, but it involves long drives, so I only recommend it if the desert is your top priority.

7 to 9 days: the imperial cities

This is the perfect length for the imperial cities: Casablanca, Rabat, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, Meknes, Fez and Marrakech, with time to breathe in each place. My 9-day Essential Imperial Journey adds Essaouira on the coast, a favorite with travelers who love art, sea air and a relaxed atmosphere.

10 to 12 days: imperial cities and the Sahara

With ten days or more, you can combine the great cities with the desert. A typical route goes from Fez to the dunes of Merzouga, then west along the road of the kasbahs through Skoura and Ouarzazate, before crossing the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech. It is the journey many travelers remember as the trip of a lifetime.

13 to 15 days or more: the complete Morocco

Two weeks let you add the north: Tangier, the blue lanes of Chefchaouen and the waterfalls of Akchour, before continuing to the imperial cities and the Sahara. You can also add free days for a hammam, a cooking class, a hike in the Atlas or simply a lazy afternoon in a riad garden.

Do not forget your special interests

Jewish heritage, food, crafts, photography or family roots can shape the whole itinerary. A Jewish heritage journey, for example, often includes Casablanca, Fez, Sefrou, Marrakech and Essaouira, and usually needs around ten days to enjoy without rushing.

My honest recommendation

For a first visit, ten to twelve days is the sweet spot: enough time for the imperial cities and the Sahara, at a comfortable pace. But every journey I plan is private, so the right length is the one that fits your dates, your energy and your dreams.

Share how many days you have, and I will propose a route that makes the most of every one of them.
